Our Story

Ever since I was a kid, I was fascinated by hair! Whether I was getting in trouble for "fixing" my sister's hair, or opening up her collectible Barbies just to see what a new haircut would look like, or how bow-bows would look in their hair, or to practice my braiding skills. Hair was my playground.

My relationship with and love for hair grew when I went to high school. Upon completion of middle school, I was accepted into the Governor’s STEM Academy at a high school outside of my zone. Because of this, I didn't go to the same school as my friends from middle school. I was a freshman at a brand-new school and didn't know one person in that building—but the one thing I did know was that my hair was flawless!

The summer before freshman year, I was deep down the rabbit hole of natural hair videos, and since I lived right across the street from a beauty supply store, that became my favorite place. After school, I would walk across the street and spend the little bit of money I had from my part-time job to buy and try new hair products. I experimented and learned so much about my hair, and my bond with it grew. Stepping into high school, my hair gave me so much confidence. It was my trusted accomplice as I went through the day, giving me the courage to step into Landstown High School, claim my space, and build what became my legacy!

During my time in high school, people would always ask me what I put in my hair, what products I used, and how I got my hair to look so good all the time. At one point, I had the idea to create a YouTube video showing my curly hair routine. That way, when people asked what I did with my hair, I could send them to my video so they could follow along at home at any time.

So, I posted my first curly hair routine video in 2016. I really enjoyed the process, so I put out another one, then another, and another, and it slowly grew into something significant. I managed to become a prominent figure in the natural haircare space, especially for men. My channel grew to over 80,000 subscribers, and my curly hair routines have garnered millions of views. There are Reddit threads dedicated to my routines, and famous streamers like Rakai have used photos of my hair as direct inspo for their stylists. My hair has been featured in publications like Yahoo Beauty, and my audience gave me the title "CEO of Curly Hair" and it has stuck ever since!

My great-grandma Martha used to always say, “Your hair is your crown and glory,” and I really lived that! Every single day, I would not step foot out into the world until my hair was flawless. I would wake up at 4:00 AM to get my hair together so that I could be at school on time. And if my hair wasn’t ready by the time I needed to leave, well then I was just going to be late—and that was that. I ran a no-nonsense program when it came to my hair, and it really gave me the confidence and courage I needed to make my high school years amazing, memorable, and a time I will always cherish.

Fast forward to 2022, and I went through a really rough time. I lost my 7-figure business, lost a relationship, and everything in my life was crumbling apart. Little did I know, it was just making room for my next chapter.

Following those tough life events, I really wanted to change things up. So in September of 2024, I moved to Houston, TX. Moving to a new city gave me the fresh start I needed and helped me begin to see all the possibilities in front of me. I was working at Starbucks, and with my spare time, I decided I wanted to start another business! When thinking about what I was going to create, I felt the pull to go back to the playground that always made me feel the best, Hair <3

It had been a dream of mine for years to one day start my own haircare line, and I had even tested samples over the past few years because I knew it was something I was eventually going to do. I already knew what manufacturers I wanted to work with, what my packaging was going to look like (thanks to my good friend Danielle at House Of MKTG), and everything. The only thing in my way was the startup funds.

One day, I was catching up with my mom and told her how excited I was to launch this new business, but that it was going to take me a while to save up enough money to cover the initial startup costs. Without hesitation, my mom told me she was willing to invest in me getting my business started! She sent me $5,000, and just two months later, Oby Hair was born!

Oby is my name, "Koby," without the K. I wanted the brand to feel like an extension of me, and it is my hope that Oby Hair provides you with the exact same confidence I felt as a high school freshman, entering a vulnerable place in life, but able to depend on my hair for the courage to stand tall, walk with my head held high, and take up all the space I deserved! We aim to provide products, service, and a compass to help you access your absolute best hair days ahead. We hope to inspire confidence in your hair, and that that confidence trickles down into everything you do!
